IRONWOOD NOVICE COMPETITION

The ultimate "first-timer" weightlifting experience

Welcome to Ironwood Barbell Club

Welcome to Ironwood Barbell Club

Date – 16 MAY

Location – 262 PROSPECT ROAD, PROSPECT SA

The Mission – To give beginners a platform to lift, learn, and grow without the pressure of a sanctioned meet.

A Competition Built for the Community

The Ironwood Novice Competition is a privately hosted, independent event.

Notice: This competition is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or organised by the municipality of SAWLA or any official weightlifting federation.

We created this event independently to provide a low-barrier entry point for athletes who want to test their strength in a supportive, unofficial environment. Our goal is to bridge the gap between "gym lifting" and "competitive lifting."

The Format (The Lifts)

This was considered a press out at a sanctioned competition.

We focus on the two classic Olympic lifts. Don't worry if your technique isn't "perfect" yet. We are here to encourage you!

  • The Snatch: Moving the bar from the ground to overhead in one fluid motion.

  • The Clean & Jerk: Moving the bar from the ground to the shoulders (Clean), then overhead (Jerk).

The "Ironwood" Judging Standard: In official meets, a slight wobble in the arms (press-out) can get you disqualified. At Ironwood, we will be more lenient with lock-out rulings. We want to see you fight for the lift and get used to the platform before you move on to sanctioned competitions.

In a traditional sanctioned meet, lifters only get 3 attempts per lift. We know that the platform can be intimidating for the first time, so we are changing the game

5 Attempts per Lift: You will have five chances at the Snatch and five chances at the Clean & Jerk.

This is a great opportunity to get your brand in front of SA's most dedicated athletes.

A person in black workout shoes, black shorts, and a maroon T-shirt is lifting a barbell with heavy weights at a gym, with the person squatting on a rubber gym floor.

20th SEPTEMBER (LAST DAY)

On the final day, we’ll celebrate in style with food and beverages available for everyone, plus sponsor goodie bags for competitors to take home. It’s more than just a competition — it’s a week-long festival of strength, community, and lifting culture.

We’re thrilled to throw open our doors to the entire lifting community — from seasoned Powerlifters to Olympic Weightlifting specialists and CrossFit athletes hungry for a challenge. This week is about strength, camaraderie, and pushing limits together. Step onto the platform, give it everything you’ve got, and celebrate every lift with a room full of people who get it. Let’s make some history under the bar!..
